A36 carbon steel plate carries carbon content capped at 0.25%, manganese between 0.8% and 1.2%, and silicon limited to 0.4%. Phosphorus and sulphur each stay below 0.035%. This composition delivers a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa and a tensile strength range of 400 to 550 MPa, with elongation of 20% across a 200 mm gauge length and 23% across a 50 mm gauge length. These figures place the grade among the most specified structural steels in India. Weldability matters here as much as raw strength: the low carbon content keeps the heat-affected zone workable across standard arc and gas welding methods, without the pre-heating that higher-carbon grades often demand.

It leaves a blue-grey mill scale on the surface and gives the plate a slightly rounded edge, both of which are typical for hot rolled structural product.
